The Leadership of Unifor Local 88 wishes the membership & their families, along with the surrounding community a Merry Christmas, A Joyful Holiday Season and a New Year filled with happiness.

As we close out this year and look back on the last 12 months I believe it can be summed up in a couple of words “Very busy”.

We have seen high production numbers continue at GM CAMI Assembly Ingersoll for another year which is great but the lack of time off does put other stresses on ourselves and our family. But working is better than the alternative. We have also seen the new west weld shop and the new door line producing product. Trial builds of the new Equinox have been going on for some time now with full production to begin in the new year. We saw the successful completion of Detroit 3 bargaining.

At AWC the yard remains steady with the shipping of all units made at the GM CAMI plant working 7 days a week on a regular basis.

At DCT Ingersoll and Owen Sound staffing remains steady and business is good. Members are working long shifts around the clock.

At DCT St Thomas staffing is low as a result of FIAT SHAP changing models.

There has been some sad news this year as well with the closing of 3 units, DCT Windsor, DCT Kitchener and SGS Ingersoll. We have successfully secure severance money at each of these locations. On behalf of the entire membership I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

The membership has grown to over 3,700 with 3,387 Active, 294 Retired and 67 Laid Off (DCT Windsor/Kitchener & SGS).

On December 13, 2016 we celebrated 28 years as Unifor Local 88.

We should also be very proud of our involvement in the community over the past year with our volunteer activities and donations over $650,000 for great organizations such as United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Fusion Youth Centre, DASO, Ingamo Homes to name a few. As the president of Unifor Local 88 I want to say that I am very proud of the entire membership for their contributions and commitment to the communities in which we live.

The next 12 months are not looking much different. Forecasted production numbers continue to be high at GM CAMI Assembly Ingersoll for both the old and new Equinox. It would appear that we will be working many Saturday’s again this year.

2017 will be very busy as we have negotiations that will take place at DCT Ingersoll, DCT St Thomas, DCT Owen Sound and GM CAMI Assembly. Your support during all these negotiations will be very important.

The year 2017 is certain to be very busy and full of challenges. We will work through this upcoming year together as one.

On behalf of the leadership of Unifor Local 88; I would like to wish all of you and your families a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Safe & Prosperous New Year.
