Month: January 2018

Reminder for GMM tomorrow

Just a reminder that the monthly General Membership Meeting is tomorrow, Sunday, morning at 10:30 am. It’s a great time to get involved in the new year. With our new website launching later next week our Photographer, Doris weir, will be setting up her mini photo studio to get pics of our elected officials for the contact pages of the new site. If you are an elected official please make plans to attend. You don’t want a grey space with no pic next to your name. The tech-type people of the Communications Committee are also willing to hang around after the meeting tomorrow with our laptops to help get members signed up for the new members area of the website. Thanks. Allan

Possible App downtime

Good afternoon everyone. Just a notice that during the afternoon, Saturday, you may experience some service interruptions while we work on the new site getting everything set up. We will try to make it as intermittent as possible. You can still access info directly through the site, unifor88.ca   Thanks. Allan.

Modernizing Federal Labour Standards

The federal government has created an online survey, the purpose of this survey is to hear from all Canadians about how to modernize labour standards for workers in the federally regulated private sector. Members of Doug Coleman Trucking are directly affected by the Canada Labour Code. Changes are needed, I urge all members of Unifor Local 88 to participate in the survey. We are calling on the federal government to improve paid time off the job through increases to vacation and personal leaves, paid breaks/lunches, improved job protection while on leaves such as maternity/parental, overtime paid after 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week for all sectors (Currently in road transportation a driver must work more than 60 hours in a week before being paid overtime), minimum notice for schedu...

ORLC Affiliates Vote to keep Unifor Delegates as members

New website almost ready.

The new Unifor Local 88 website will be launching very soon. There will be all things that were on the old site + some new features like a more compact easier to navigate design with links to all things Local 88 and an improved members area. Please note – over the next two weeks some features of the old site may be intermittent as we move the last few things over to the new one. We will try to keep any interruptions as brief as possible. We are not currently approving members trying to sign up for the old members area because it will be shutting down shortly so if you have been trying to sign up in the last few weeks you will need to sign up again after we launch. Stay tuned we will keep everyone updated.

Unifor stands firmly in opposition to Trans-Pacific Partnership

Unifor stands firmly in opposition to Trans-Pacific Partnership January 23, 2018 Reports have surfaced today suggesting that Canada has agreed to terms on a revised Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement. Although details are sparse, this is a deeply concerning development, to which Unifor stands firmly in opposition. Unifor’s criticism of the TPP agreement has been unwavering. The original pact, signed in February 2016, was deeply flawed.  Major concessions were made by Canada that would have negatively affected our country’s auto and dairy industries, our cultural sector, access to affordable medicines, and other areas of major concern. The TPP, like other so-called “free trade” agreements, directed minimal attention to broader social and economic development issues. It failed to mean...

Notice to Members on Unifor’s Disaffiliation from the Canadian Labour Congress

January 17, 2018 IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM UNIFOR LEADERSHIP Over the course of the past year Unifor has been vocal and public about our concern with US-based unions trampling on the rights of workers and their democratic right to choose their own representation or to express dissent. In light of the ongoing lack of action and will by the affiliates of the Canadian Labour Congress to address the aggressive and undemocratic tactics shown by US-based unions towards workers in Canadian locals, a decision was made by the leadership of our union. The National Executive Board (NEB) made a unanimous decision on January 16, 2018 to discontinue Unifor’s affiliation and membership in the Canadian Labour Congress effective immediately. The CLC has been notified of this decision today, along with other l...
