Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development
Dave MacKenzie, MP Oxford
Prime Minister and Ministers;
The federal government and Canada Revenue Agency are arbitrarily converting regular Employment Insurance claims that are not COVID-19 related over to the CERB (Canadian Emergency Response Benefit).
In some cases, workers will receive LESS than they would get from E.I.
This is unfair.
Many unionized Canadian workplaces have negotiated S.U.B. (Supplemental Unemployment Benefits) through their collective agreements to be paid in conjunction with regular employment insurance claims. S.U.B. benefits also contribute to pensionable earnings.
The new legislation by the Federal government does not allow companies to pay negotiated S.U.B. benefits as CERB recipients may not receive any other earnings.
Workers laid off due to a shortage of work and not as a result of COVID-19 should not be penalized due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Prime Minister Trudeau, Minister Qualtrough and Members of Parliament, ensure that workers entitled to full E.I. and/or S.U.B. benefits will receive them and that negotiated labour contracts are not superseded by this new legislation.
