Members,
Ontario voters have been pushed into a provincial election while facing an unknown future because of President Trump’s crushing tariff threats.
The ongoing threat of sweeping tariffs of 25% on Canadian goods and 10% on energy imported to the United States has thrown our country into instability. Just the potential of tariffs is causing economic harm to workers and our economy.
This is a national crisis, impacting 10,000s of Unifor members across every sector of the economy. Some industries are more at risk of closures, job loss, and slowdowns as a result of Trump’s threatened tariffs. In Ontario, workers in automotive and IPS, manufacturing, dairy, forestry, energy and mining are exposed to increased risk from these irrational and excessive tariffs on Canadian products.
Our federal and Ontario governments are both in states of uncertainty, so worker representatives must remain laser-focused on the most important job of our union: defending members’ jobs.
So, just like in previous elections, Unifor is not endorsing a party in this Ontario election.
Instead, we are engaging with all political parties and candidates to push for commitments that will protect Canadian jobs, defend our economy, and deliver much needed improvements to health care, child care, and other key social services. To ensure that we do not let Trump’s economic attacks change what makes us proud to be Canadian, we know how important it is to build communities where families get the support they need when times are tough. We have to be tough, united and we have to take care of each other.
Too much is at stake for partisan games. Unifor must be a trusted member of the Team Canada effort to fight off Trump’s attempt at destruction. We are clear-eyed and focused on this goal, and we are looking for every candidate in the province to join us.
