Letter Of Support & Solidarity For Brampton Assembly

Unifor Local 88 stands in full solidarity with the members of Unifor Local 1285 at the Brampton Assembly Plant. The auto industry is a vital part of our country’s economy, and every job connected to it must be protected.

We recognize that the current tariff landscape is creating real challenges across the auto sector. But these companies have the ability and resources to adapt without sacrificing Canadian jobs or walking away from their commitments.

It’s deeply disheartening to see Stellantis backtracking on the commitments negotiated by Unifor in 2023 — commitments that included job protections and major investments in the Brampton plant. Those same negotiations also secured investment commitments from GM for the Oshawa (222) and St. Catharines (199) Plants. Back in 2021, GM CAMI (88) was also awarded funding to convert to electric vehicle production.

Fast forward to today, and each of these facilities is once again facing some form of uncertainty — despite the agreements that were made in good faith.

We call on our provincial and federal governments to hold these companies accountable and honour the commitments they made to Canadian taxpayers and workers. These corporations accepted public funds with promises to protect Canadian jobs and invest in our communities. Now is the time for our elected leaders to stand up and ensure those promises are kept. Enough is enough. This must stop now.

Unifor Local 88 will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with all autoworkers across the country. Our strength has always been, and always will be, in our solidarity.

In solidarity,

Brent Tree President, Unifor Local 88
