Benefits FAQ

What is happening with my vacation?

Anyone who has not yet received their vacation payout and is going on long-term layoff will have their vacation and banked time paid out this Thursday. You will see it reflected on your paystub this Tuesday.

If you are currently on an EI claim, you should continue to report as usual (no earnings, wages, or other monies). However, please contact us in Benefits so we can document the payout with Service Canada after you have your paystub.

There is a temporary measure in place until April 11, 2026, stating that money paid out due to a layoff does not count against your EI benefits. Even so, it must still be documented with Service Canada to avoid audit issues.

If you are now on full SUB, you do NOT have to reach out to us.

What is happening with ROEs for Skilled Trades and those recently laid off?

There is currently a delay with ROEs being issued. It is best that ROEs are completed after vacation payouts have been processed, since these payouts  may count toward insurable earnings. This approach helps prevent denial letters and overpayment issues with EI.

Do I have benefits?

Yes, this is not a plant closure, so you remain eligible for all benefits outlined in the collective agreement. This includes dental coverage, which was negotiated in the last agreement.

How long do I have benefits for?

The duration of your benefits while on layoff depends on your length of service:

  • Group laid off February 21, 2025: Benefits continue until March 1, 2026.

  • Group laid off May 16, 2025:

    • Less than 10 years of service: Benefits continue until June 1, 2026.

    • 10 or more years of service: Benefits continue until June 1, 2027.

If your layoff date differs, please refer to the benefits duration chart below for details.

Do I still have Legal Services coverage?

Yes. All employees will continue to have Legal Services coverage for 18 months from their layoff date. To access legal service please call: 1-800-268-7573.

Do retirees have benefits?

Yes. Retiree benefits remain in effect going forward and are not limited by the timelines listed above.

What should I do if I’ve applied for EI but my claim is still under review?

If your EI claim is taking longer than expected, please contact the Benefits Department.
We are aware of several claims where the EI system does not automatically recognize the most recent ROE, and these cases need to be manually finalized.
